Numericals in Physics - how to do it fast
Introduction:
It is always a big challenge that we have to do calculations and sums for physics to arrive the answers with in the 1 hour stipulated time. Yes! for each subject you must allocate at least 1 hour. Refer our article Strategy For NEET for more information. It is almost April, it is very important that you must prepared well for your entrance examination - just 2 or 3 months (any crash course) preparations wont work. You must have very well completed the preparations by the last December itself. By this time you should practice well and refer other publication books as additional reference. Remember for your main preparation use only NCERT books.
But how do we complete the complex numericals in physics with in the short time. The real success lies on your Practice - Yes! It is the Key. The more you practice would help you to understand the nature of question asked. Solving any numerical basically involves,
- Understanding the problem
- Deciding an approach to solve.
- Calculating the answer.
To Understand the problem:
Read the question as care fully as much as you can; and of course you needs to remember all the formulas. If you had practiced similar previous year question papers you shall easily find the pattern that any of the asked question follows. Apply method of elimination since this is MCQ type questions. Carefully look at the answers before even starting to solve the and see if you can eliminate any answer. When calculating answer for a big question you may not need to solve the problem fully in order to choose the right answer because you could eliminate the other 3.
Decide an approach to Solve:
Once you understand the problem - the question, then you must decide on a approach to solve the particular. There might be several approaches for a particular problem - but you must choose the one which is you are very familiar and strong enough. Try also to concentrate on the solution timing. Some approaches might take lot of calculations and would also eat up the time, try to avoid those and make a simpler choice.
Calculating the answer:
This is a difficult part, to calculate faster you must have practiced math skills like addition, subtraction, roots, squares, tables, etc. a lot number of times. The basic math like "Learning addition of Numbers" is not a skill, its a gaining knowledge - but at the same time "Learning addition of Numbers FAST" is a skill. Remember "Skills are perfected via repeated practice" - you should practice basic mathematics a lot number of times, and must be strong in it.
Also use shortcuts for a problem, if you have learnt "ABACUS" it would be a great help to solve multiplication, divisions etc. But be careful with those since it doesn't involve and have any step marks. Do not worry! if you haven't learnt it is only a methodology, and you already have alternates.
General Tips:
- First use your NCERT books - These books are very well written
- Learn the basic mathematics like trigonometry and calculus properly.
- Have an in-depth understanding of concepts and don't just mug up the formula or read the theory without understanding it.
- Apply method of elimination for MCQ questions.
- Take regular mock tests and practice previous year question papers.
- Solve some simple examples which could clear your concepts.
- Solve the problems by drawing the figures and do not look at the solution while solving.
- In the beginning it would take a lot of time but at the end you can easily approach questions related to the subject.
We have also enclosed a practice worksheet for Physics, which would further refine your basic math skills. Download from here.
